Aggrenox
drug dipyridamole. When dipyridamole is sold under the name Aggrenox it is combined with Asprin. Aggrenox is used for seconary prevention of transient ischemic heart attack and stroke. How does Aggrenox work and how effective is Aggrenox? Aggrenox causes vasodilation - this is a process by which the smooth muscle that surrounds the blood vessels becomes relaxed, which makes the blood vessels wider and allows more blood to flow through them. This also reduces blood pressure, which makes it useful in cases where a heart attack is caused by unusually high blood pressure (vasodilation is also used naturally by the body in situations where it is hot so that the warm blood inside the body can be taken to the surface and release its heat against the outside of the skin). For acute stroke Aggrenox can be used to help regain the normal functioning of blocked blood vessels by causing them to widen and permit through the obstructions that have blocked them.
Aggrenox side effects: Aggrenox and gynecomastia - in some situations gynecomastia can be caused by the mechanism of vasodilation that Aggrenox acts through. Overdose of the prescription drug Aggrenox can be dangerous as too much vasodilation greatly lowers blood pressure and this can cause people to pass out; combined with alcohol or chemical depressants this can even result in death. Aggrenox is generally only taken by patients in the hospital or by people who use it as part of a treatment regimen for preventing further heart attacks, and in these cases Aggrenox is usually suggested by the doctor as a way to prevent high blood pressure and vasoconstriction from causing additional damage to the body.
How does Aggrenox work? The most active drug in Aggrenox is the dipyridamole. What this chemical does is it prevents platelets in the blood from joining together (aggregating) by preventing the cellular reuptake of adenosine. It also increases the levels of adenosine in the bloodstream by inhibiting an enzyme that usually breaks down adenosine into inosine. There are other chemical mechanisms by which dipyridamole increases the amount of extracellular adenosine and causes the smooth muscles that lines the blood vessels of the body to loosen. If you are having problems with high blood pressure or vasoconstriction or if you are at high risk for another heart attack or experiencing hypertension, you may be interested in speaking with your doctor about Aggrenox.
