Diazepam
Diazepam is a sedative drug commonly marketed under the brand name Valium. It is also available as a cheaper generic. Diazepam may also be used as a muscle relaxant and anticonvulsant drug. Diazepam is given by mouth, intravenously, and as a rectal gel or suppository. It is frequently used before medical procedures, to relax the patient who may be nervous enough that the procedure could not be done without a sedative. Common doses of Diazepam are 5mg and 10 mg.
Diazepam side effects include stomach upset, drowsiness, weakness, and dizziness. More serious side effects include seizures, trouble breathing, irregular heartbeat, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin). Notify your doctor immediately if you experience any of these major side effects, or if any unusual symptoms arise and do not go away.
You should inform your doctor of any other medications you are taking, as many medications may interact badly with Diazepam. For example, Diazepam and Promethazine, a common antihistamine, should not be used together, as Diazepam may increase the effects of Promethazine. You should also not use alcohol or any drugs that may cause drowsiness while you are taking Diazepam. Diazepam is a class "D " drug, so women who are pregnant must not take it. If you become pregnant while taking Diazepam, let your doctor know immediately. Women who are breastfeeding must not take Diazepam, as it will pass to their infant through the breast milk.
Patients with sleep apnea should not take Diazepam, as it can cause them to stop breathing, possibly to the point of being fatal. Patients on dialysis or that are infected with hepatitis should also avoid Diazepam, as should people who suffer from depression. Elderly patients should be monitored carefully, as advanced age increases the risk of side effects. Patients with a history of drug abuse or addiction should not take Diazepam. Diazepam is highly addictive, and therefore you should never buy Diazepam with no prescription.
Diazepam should only be taken under a doctor's care. Do not stop taking Diazepam without consulting your doctor, as he or she may want to gradually remove you from the drug. Gradual reduction of Diazepam is easier than other drugs, because lower doses of Diazepam are available. For example, the Diazepam to Lorazepam conversion is 10 mg to 1 mg. You may also discuss herbal alternatives to Prozac and Diazepam with you doctor, as some herbal remedies are available.
