Ditropan

Ditropan is prescribed for treatment of overactive bladder. Ditropan medication works by calming bladder spasms, which reduces urine leakage and makes the patient have to urinate less frequently. Ditropan is also used to treat excessive sweating, especially facial sweating. It may also be given to Multiple Sclerosis patients who take baclofen, as baclofen can cause excessive urination. Ditropan is available in tablet and syrup forms, and is also sold under the generic name oxybutynin.

Ditropan side effects include dry mouth, cough, and nausea. Some patients also report Ditropan causes erectile dysfunction. More serious side effects include irregular heartbeat or difficulty urinating. You should get immediate medical attention if you experience serious side effects or allergic reaction while taking Ditropan. Ditropan is a class "B" drug, which means it is generally safe for pregnant women to take. However, your doctor should still be informed if you are pregnant, become pregnant while on Ditropan, or are breastfeeding. It is unknown if Ditropan passes into breast milk, so tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Ditropan may be prescribed for children 6 years old or older, to control bedwetting that is caused by nerve disorders such as spina bifida. Children under 6 years old will not be prescribed Ditropan. As Ditropan reduces sweating, you should take care to not become overheated, such as avoiding excessive physical activity in hot weather. You may suffer a heat stroke if you become too overheated. Elderly patients are more prone to the side effects of Ditropan.

Ditropan must be taken exactly as prescribed, to avoid the possibility of overdose. Symptoms of overdose include fever, irregular heartbeat, and sudden decrease in urination. Seek immediate medical care if you believe you have overdosed on Ditropan. Your doctor should be aware of any medical conditions you have and all medications you are taking, before you begin a Ditropan regimen. Patients with glaucoma, liver or kidney disease, and certain stomach conditions should not take Ditropan. Alcohol and any medications that cause drowsiness should be avoided while taking Ditropan. This includes many common over the counter drugs such as Dramamine and Benadryl. Any herbal supplements you take should also be mentioned to your doctor prior to starting a Ditropan regimen. Do not take Ditropan without being under a doctor's care. Your condition will need to be monitored regularly to ensure Ditropan is right for you, and that your dosage is correct.
