Famvir

Famvir is an antiviral medication used in the treatment of various types of herpes. Famvir is commonly prescribed to treat genital herpes, oral herpes, and herpes zoster (shingles). It is also used to treat herpes in immunosuppressed patients, such as those with HIV/AIDS. As there is no cure for herpes, Famvir is a treatment to relieve symptoms only. It is available in generic form under the name famciclovir. Usual Famvir dosages are 125 mg, 250 mg, and 500 mg, depending on the condition it is prescribed to treat. It is available in tablet form. Famvir is also available in a one day dosage for genital herpes.

Famvir side effects include fatigue, diarrhea, and headache. Allergic reaction may occur, and should be treated immediately, but most side effects are minor and should not cause the patient to stop taking Famvir. Notify your doctor if any of these symptoms intensify or are particularly bothersome to you. Famvir is a class "B" drug, and although it is not thought to be dangerous to pregnant or nursing women, there have not been adequate studies to show it is absolutely safe for these women to take. Therefore, you should not take Famvir if you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding, or plan to become pregnant or breastfeed, without discussing the risks and benefits with your doctor. Your doctor should be made aware of any medical conditions you have, especially immune system disorders such as HIV/AIDS, or kidney disease. Famvir contains lactose, so also inform your doctor if you are lactose intolerant. Many drugs may also interact poorly with Famvir, so disclose all drug use, including over the counter medications and vitamin or herbal supplement use, to your doctor before beginning a Famvir regimen. Your doctor may need to prescribe another type of antiviral medication, such as Zovirex, if he or she feels you should not take Famvir.

Even though you may begin to feel better or notice your symptoms disappear after only a few doses of Famvir, you must complete the entire dosage as prescribed by your doctor. This is to deliver the full course of medication into your system, and ensure the symptoms do not return. You should also not take Famvir for longer than prescribed. Many online pharmacies offer next day delivery or overnight delivery of Famvir, so that you may begin the regimen as soon as possible after your doctor prescribes it. Do not take Famvir unless under a doctor's care.
