Typical Glucophage dosages are 500 mg, 850 mg, and 1000 mg, in tablet form.

Side effects of Glucophage range from minor effects like vomiting, headache, or muscle pain, to major side effects such as sudden weight gain, fever, and shortness of breath. Some patients also report weight loss as a side effect; however, Glucophage should not be taken for this purpose. You should seek immediate medical care for any major side effects or allergic reactions to Glucophage. Glucophage is a class "B" drug, so it should not cause harm when taken by women who are pregnant or nursing. However, women who are or plan to become pregnant, and those who are breastfeeding, should discuss the possible risks with their doctor before taking Glucophage. Patients with liver, kidney, or heart disease should not take Glucophage. Your doctor must be made aware of all medical conditions you have. Common medications such as birth control pills, or even over the counter cold remedies, may interact with Glucophage. On the other hand, some medications such as ester-c do not appear to interact with Glucophage, so to be safe, your doctor should be told about all medications you are currently taking or begin taking, including vitamin and herbal supplements. Certain drugs like aspirin may also reduce your blood sugar levels when taken with Glucophage, possibly to a dangerous level.

Overdose of Glucophage may cause rapid heartbeat, seizure, or a condition called lactic acidosis, a buildup of lactic acid in the body. Lactic acidosis is characterized by slow heartbeat, chills, and fainting. A Glucophage overdose is serious, and calls for immediate medical care. Such an overdose can be fatal if left untreated.

Glucophage is also used to treat infertility problems, such as PCOS, a condition causing ovarian cysts. It may also be prescribed to regulate the menstrual cycle, improve your chances of becoming pregnant, and reduce miscarriage risk once you do conceive. Women on Glucophage are also found to be less likely to develop gestational diabetes. You should discuss Glucophage use with your reproductive specialist or OB/GYN before beginning a Glucophage regimen.
