Imitrex
Imitrex is a migraine headache medicine. It is prescribed to treat migraine headaches and their associated symptoms. Imitrex will not prevent migraine headaches from happening; it can only treat a migraine headache that has already begun. Generic Imitrex is sold under the name Sumatriptan. Imitrex nasal spray and tablets are available. An injectable form is available under the brand name only. Since the Imitrex patent expiration date is not until the year 2008, no generic injectable can be produced until then. Imitrex should only be used to treat patients that a doctor has diagnosed with migraine headaches, not just severe regular headaches.
Imitrex side effects range from minor ones such as dizziness, nausea, and nose or throat irritation after using Imitrex nasal spray, to major problems like chest pain, vomiting, and seizure. Keep your doctor informed of any minor side effects you experience, but seek emergency treatment for major side effects or allergic reactions. Imitrex is a class "C" drug, and should not be taken by pregnant or breastfeeding women. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant while taking Imitrex. You should not take Imitrex if you have severe hypertension (high blood pressure), or a history of heart problems. Your doctor should know about all your medical conditions, especially liver, kidney, or coronary artery disease before prescribing Imitrex for you. Other migraine drugs or antidepressants may interact badly with Imitrex. Tell your doctor about all medications you are taking, to avoid dangerous drug interactions.
Imitrex is not a daily drug. Imitrex is only taken as needed. Patients must be careful not to take too many Imitrex at once, or take doses too close together, to avoid overdose. Overdose of Imitrex is characterized by tremors, breathing problems, and convulsions. Do not ignore the symptoms of overdose, as an Imitrex overdose may be fatal. Get immediate medical treatment if you think you may have overdosed. Because of the risk of overdose or adverse effects, you should always take Imitrex under a doctor's care. Imitrex patients may need to be monitored regularly for the onset of hypertension (high blood pressure).
Many online pharmacies offer Imitrex with overnight or next day delivery. You should check several sites to compare Imitrex pricing. GlaxoSmithKline, the manufacturer of Imitrex, also offers special savings through their website. They also offer a prescription drug assistance program on their website, for those patients who cannot afford Imitrex, have no prescription drug coverage, and meet certain income criteria. See the Imutrex home page for more details.
