Imuran

Imuran is an antimetabolite drug that is primarily used, along with other drugs, to prevent patients from rejecting a transplanted kidney. Imuran may also be used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, Churg-Strauss syndrome, ulcerative colitis, and other organ transplant patients. It is available in generic form under the name Azathioprine. Imuran is available in 25 mg, 50 mg, 75 mg, and 100 mg tablets. Imuran is also used to treat certain autoimmune conditions in dogs.

Adverse effects of Imuran include minor effects like vomiting or nausea. More serious Imuran Side effects include jaundice (yellowing of the skin), painful urination, and fatigue. Seek emergency medical care for major side effects or allergic reactions, but also tell your doctor about any minor side effects you experience. Imuran is a class "D" drug, and therefore should never be taken by pregnant or nursing women. If you become pregnant while taking Imuran, tell your doctor immediately. People with kidney or liver disease, recent infections, or anemia may not be able to take Imuran. Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions. Some medicines such as blood thinners may interact poorly with Imuran. Your doctor must know about all medications you are taking, including over the counter and vitamin or herbal supplements, to avoid dangerous drug interactions.

Imuran may weaken your immune system. Therefore, you should not get any vaccinations while taking Imuran without your doctor's approval, especially vaccines containing live viruses. You may also become more prone to infection, so avoid people with contagious diseases like chicken pox, and take extra care not to cut yourself, as infection may enter your body through the cut. Imuran may also increase your risk of certain cancers, such as lymphoma. Any doctors who treat you, including dentists and surgeons, should be aware that you are taking Imuran prior to treating you.

You should only take Imuran while under a doctor's care. Your doctor will have you undergo regular screenings for liver function and blood counts while you are taking Imuran. It is extremely important that you make and keep regular follow up appointments with your doctor so he or she will be aware of any problems or side effects you are having. If you must cancel an appointment, reschedule it as soon as possible. Take Imuran exactly as directed, to avoid possible overdose. Overdose symptoms are severe nausea, vomiting, and easy bruising or bleeding. Get immediate medical care for an Imuran overdose, as it may be fatal.
