Macrobid

Macrobid is an antibiotic typically prescribed for urinary tract infections, but it can also be used to treat other forms of bacteria within the body. The name Macrobid is a brand name for the medication. Furadantin, Macrodantin, and Macrobid are all different brand names for the same drug. The generic name for Macrobid is nitrofurantoin. If you need to take Macrobid during pregnancy, be sure to let your doctor know you are pregnant. Macrobid and pregnancy can be harmless during the first trimester when under a doctor’s supervision, but the drug Macrobid should not be taken later in pregnancy or when breast feeding.

Macrobid pills can cause many side effects, including the most common: rust or orange colored urine. Other Macrobid side effects can include headaches, nausea and more. Macrobid, as with all antibiotics, might cause interaction with birth control pills, so be sure to use backup birth control while taking Macrobid. Macrobid can also interact with other medications, including herbal medicines and over the counter medications, so be sure to tell your doctor about any other medicines you take. If you have a Macrobid allergy, you may show symptoms such as a rash or other severe side effects. If you experience any rashes, hives or other severe reactions listed in the Macrobid prescriber information (you should receive a copy of this with your pills), stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor.

Although typically Macrobid is used for UTI’s, there can be other illnesses that may require treatment with this medication. Take the pills as directed and don’t mix Macrobid and alcohol. As with all antibiotics, alcohol and Macrobid is not a good combination. Typically, you will be able to notice a difference within a few days of taking the medicine and it is very likely that your doctor will schedule a follow up visit within a couple of weeks to make sure your infection is completely gone. Take all of the Macrobid exactly as prescribed by the doctor, even if you feel better, because you will begin to feel better well before the infection is actually completely gone. There are other steps you can take to treat your urinary tract infection while you are taking Macrobid. These include drinking plenty of water and cranberry juice and cutting sodas out of your diet for a while. This can help immensely with the pain and the healing process, helping you to feel better faster.
