Plavix

Plavix is a type of drug that prevents the blood within the body from clotting by interrupting the platelets of the blood. Plavix does this in order to prevent blood clots that can lead to stroke or heart attacks in certain patients. Many times, Plavix will be prescribed to patients who have already experienced a heart attack or stroke and it is a prevention of the next case. In some situations, however, the patient may have certain heart or blood conditions which require the use of Plavix to avoid blood clotting.

Plavix is the brand name of the medication, but it is also available in generic form. Generic Plavix is called clopidogrel. Plavix generic works just as well as the name brand, and the generic for Plavix will often look the same or similar. The generic had to wait for the Plavix patent to expire on the first round, so now it can be the exact same medication with a different name. When taking Plavix, it is important to remember that the interruption of blood coagulation means that if you get a cut, you will bleed much more than normal. You may also have to stop taking the medicine at least a few days before surgery will take place to prevent excessive or dangerous bleeding that can’t be stopped.

There are many side effects of Plavix that can occur. Side effects for Plavix are often related simply to the fact that they prevent the clotting of blood. This itself can present dangers of Plavix. Some Plavix side effects are actually reactions, however. You may be allergic to the medication, or you may be taking another medicine that is causing a reaction when the two mix. This can include a Lipitor Plavix interaction, as well as other drug cocktails. Plavix and Lipitor should typically not be used at the same time, and you will want to take special care to make sure any doctors you see know that you are taking Plavix.

Other Plavix side effects can include Plavix and bruising more than normal. It is also more likely that stomach or intestinal bleeding can occur, and alcohol should be avoided while you are taking this medication. If you are concerned with the many side effects, or heard something about a Plavix recall and it makes you nervous, ask your doctor about the comparison of Plavix versus aspirin post mi. Sometimes, voicing your concerns will be enough to help you find an alternative to dangerous medications.
