Provera
What is Provera? Provera is a type of hormone pill that is typically prescribed to treat changes in the uterine lining that can be created by other hormone therapies or to restart periods that have stopped. In some instances, Provera can also be given as a treatment for endometriosis and sleep apnea. (It has even been used as a treatment for sexually aggressive behavior in men). A medication that is comparable to Provera is Clomid.
Provera tablets are taken on a daily basis, and Provera tablets to induce periods may contain a different dosage than those given for postmenopausal women. Similarly, Provera may need to be taken for a different length of time in these two cases. There can be many Provera side effects, and the most common is fetal harm. Even taking Provera for a few days in the early part of a pregnancy can cause birth defects. Other side effects can include the risk of certain cancers brought on by female hormones, as well as an increased risk of blood clotting while using Provera. Acne and weight and appetite changes are also very common with this drug.
A variation on the hormones within Provera makes up the birth control Depo Provera. Depo Provera to prevent pregnancy is given in the form of a Depo Provera shot. Depo Provera birth control is given every few months, so this means you don’t have to worry about birth control except a few times a year. The downside of this is that there is such an increased level of hormone within the medicine, that after receiving Depo Provera, you may experience more side effects than you would with other forms of birth control. Depo Provera shot side effects can include Depo Provera weight gain, as well as either a stoppage of periods or continual periods. Since the medication is intended to last for months, these Depo Provera side effects must typically be dealt with until the medication wears off, even if they are bothersome. Another downfall to the medication staying in the system so long is that it is possible to have a miscarriage after Depo Provera if you don’t wait long enough to become pregnant after your last shot. Depo Provera can have its benefits, however. Not having to remember to take a pill everyday is a common favorite of users, and those who do stop having periods while using Depo Provera are typically very happy about it.
