Tagamet

Tagamet is a brand name of the drug Cimetidine, (also called Tagamet HB, HB200 or Tagamet UID) which is an H2 histamine blocker that inhibits the production of acid in the stomach by blocking the histamine chemical. This can assist in treating stomach ulcers, small intestine ulcers and gastrointesophageal reflux disease. It has also been helpful in treating esophagitis caused by acid reflux and other conditions related to increased acid secretion. Tagamet generics, Cimetidine tablets, is the alternative to the brand name.

Tagamet For Warts

Is it true that Tagamet can treat warts? There are conflicting reports on this, as some users report that Tagamet can be effective treatment against flat warts (verruca plana), at least theoretically, because it modifies the immune system so that the body attacks the virus that causes the wart. Some patients have reported that using this traditional heartburn and ulcer medication did merit a response, although it took anywhere from one to two months to see any progress. (About 30 mg a day) However, others have stated that there was no effect, particularly against raised warts.

Tagamet Side Effects

Tagamet's possible side effects include diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness and headache, though not all patients have reported these symptoms. Allergic reactions, whether to preexisting medical conditions or interaction with other medications, can be more serious and can include symptoms such as rash, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth and face, breast lumps or enlargement, anxiety and depression, sexual difficulties, hallucinations or accelerated heartbeat. If you experience severe symptoms then seek medical attention. Tagamet dosage was at one time only prescribed by a doctor, however only generic prescriptions are still offered, along with OTC dosages of Tagamet. Besides pregnancy and smoking, taking other prescription medication may put you at risk of an allergic reaction to Tagamet. Some questionable medications include drugs for asthma, angina, blood thinning, cancer, high blood pressure, erectile dysfunction and various psychiatric disorders. Chantix and Tagamet are known to have minor but not life-threatening interactions.

Other Tagamet Concerns

Tagamet is often used in nuclear medicine, that is diseases that are treated by using small amounts of radioactive chemicals. Tagamet and Zantac can work equivalently if they are given in equal doses. This is because they belong to the same class of acid suppressing agents called histamine receptor antagonists. Tagamet combined with Prilosec, however, would not be equal since Prilosec is a proton pump inhibitor and more potent in acid secretion. Most doctors would try Tagamet before attempting something stronger as Prilosec.

Tagamet is sometimes used for dogs, though Tagamet for dogs is not officially recommended. Nevertheless, consult a veterinarian before giving a pet any Cimetidine to find out how long treatment should last. You can find Tagamet on sale at online stores such as MediChest.com and HealthPricer.com.
