Triphasil

Triphasil is Ethinyl Estradiol and Levonorgestrel, a combination of female hormones that prevent ovulation. Though Ethinyl Estradiol and Levonorgestrel is the generic name of the drug, Triphasil, along with Aviane, Levlen and Trivora are sold as brand names. In addition to preventing ovulation, Triphasil also changes a woman's cervical mucous and uterine lining making it very difficult for sperm to reach the uterus, and also for a fertilized egg to attach itself to the uterus.

What To Know About Triphasil And Birth Control Medications

Triphasil should not be used if you are pregnant or have recently had a baby. Doctors also avoid prescribing Triphasil if their patient has a history of blood clot, stroke, circulation problems, high blood pressure, vaginal bleeding, a hormone-related form of cancer or are overweight. In addition, some prescription medications can interact with the Triphasil birth control, if not causing serious side effects, then decreasing the effectiveness of the pills. This is why it's important to tell your doctor about all of the medication you are taking (including herbal supplements) prior to taking Triphasil. Triphasil can not only cause birth defects if it is taken while pregnant, it can also pass into the breast milk and harm a nursing baby.

It is important to follow the dosage as is prescribed. Do not take larger amounts than necessary or for a longer period of time than is required. Doctors usually instruct patients to start taking the Triphasil contraceptive pill on the first day of their period or on the first Sunday after their period begins. The Triphasil 28 day birth control pack contains seven extra pills that serve as reminders to keep regular on the cycle, or else birth control is all for nothing. Back up birth control methods are recommended upon first starting the medication, including condoms and or spermicides.
