Zomig

Zomig is the brand name of the oral selective serotonin receptor agonist drug, Zolmitriptan. Besides Zomig, Zolmitriptan is also marketed as Zomigon, AscoTop and Zomigoro in various countries by the AstraZeneca company. Zomig may be sold generically as Zolmitriptan tablets. Zomig is available as generic tablets or in Zomig nasal spray. Zomig is a Triptan drug that works to narrow the widened blood vessels that often cause migraine headaches. Zomig can be used with or without aura treatment in adults. While it doesn't prevent migraines it can help to relieve pain.

Instructions On Zomig Headache Medication

If you are taking Zomig tablets then follow the prescription as the doctor suggests. Take the tablets as soon as you notice headache symptoms of an incoming migraine attack. For the best results, lie down in a quiet and dark room after taking the tablets. After two hours pass you can take another two tablets if the first dosage is not enough. Do not take another dosage before the proper time, nor more than 10 mg in a 24 hour period. Expired medicine should always be discarded.

If you are taking Zomig nasal spray then there is a different set of directions. The nasal spray should be sprayed directly into your nose at the first sign of a migraine attack. Like the tablets, if the pain persists after two hours you may take another dosage. Do not take more than 10 mg in a 24 hour time period. This drug is not intended for every day use and extra dosage should always be approved by a doctor.

Zomig Side Effects

A doctor should always be aware of a patient's medical history, both physical conditions (such as diseases) and current medications. For example, Zomig is not recommended to patients who have used Ergot Alkaloid as well as Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor drugs in the recent past. Other prescription medications that might interact with the Zomig drug include SSRIs, Sibutramine and various sorts of Serotonin Agonists. Zomig and Relpax are known to have some interaction issues. Not all interactions will increase dangerous side effects though. But even if there are no side effects the effectiveness of the medication can be compromised. Medical conditions that may change the doctor's opinion on dosage include a history of heart disease or high blood pressure, post-menopausal symptoms and Diabetes. Women who are pregnant or who are thinking of getting pregnant should ask their doctor about any potential Zomig dangers, including breastfeeding.
